Piece for Esquire’s Grooming Spectacular: The Ramifications of a bold new haircut - in the October 2011 issue. My good friend Amy Meyer did a fantastic job creating the stallion hairpiece. Model is my friend Gabe. ¡El magnífico semental!

30 Americans

This week I visited the Corcoran Gallery of Art to see the special exhibition 30 Americans. The show, from the Rubell Family Collection, is a survey of contemporary African American artists. It was refreshing to see a show with such diverse perspectives and approaches to art-making (none of this exhausting process-oriented stuff I’ve been seeing in SO MANY SHOWS). If you’re in DC, go!

Here are some of my favorites:

Iona Rozeal Brown (always a personal favorite), Sacrifice #2: It Has to Last (after Yoshitoshi’s “Drowsy: the appearance of a harlot of the Meiji era”)

Kehinde Wiley, Sleep (I’m not always a big Wiley fan, but this monstrous painting (25 feet in length) really struck me. To be face to face with this sleeping giant was quite an experience.)

Jeff Sonhouse, Visually Impaired (So quirky, and wonderful use of material. This photo doesn’t do it justice, as the coat is made up of small, stacked wood pieces.)
